When you understand how to install a house surveillance program, you may move the actual cameras close to you as your requirements change. Installing the gear yourself isn’t as difficult as you might think. The toughest part will be running the actual cables towards the monitors. Nevertheless, you can make this happen with several tools. The house surveillance program is something that every home must have today. The techniques are affordable and can be very durable when set correctly; here is how

Best place for the camera

Select the actual areas you want to watch about the cameras. The areas that have entry towards the house would be the best places for those cameras.

The right place for the camera

Screw the actual mounting brackets to the wall so the camera could be angled to a point in the entryways. Drill the actual holes for that coaxial cable television directly underneath the mounting group.

Place the coaxial cable to the wall.

Place the coaxial cable to the wall as well as keep giving the cable television until this reaches the region where the actual monitor is going to be. Remember how the coaxial could be run to some basement after which it up to a different room of the house if the actual monitor room is situated on various sides of the house?

Coaxial cable

Attach the actual coaxial cable towards the camera as well as mount the actual camera about the mounting group. Attach the actual coaxial cable to the monitor as well as adjust the actual camera to be able to see all you need to observe. Move the actual camera slowly to find the right look.

Hook the recorder

Hook the recorder as much as the monitor should you plan to record the actual action of the cameras. This is done by managing a coaxial cable in the output of the monitor towards the input of the recorder. Make use of a tape made specifically for the monitoring recorder.

Green Jobs and Industries Still A Bright Spot In the Economy

I was reading Forbes.com today and stumbled across a column that put a smile on my face. While researching “the effects on the economy and job market from…greater green industry,” Michael Marks came to the same realization I did a short while ago: “Lo and behold, I found a topic that is nearly universally positive.
With housing and financial turmoil, the increase in energy costs, and disasters dominating headlines for the past few months, it may be easy to overlook the progress of green industries and the promise they hold for America’s future.

And Their Promise is Starting to Be Fulfilled:

2007 Solar Energy Boom

2007 set solar energy records: 314 megawatts of new solar-generating capacity were constructed or installed in the U.S. last year, creating more than 6,000 new jobs and adding over $2 billion to the economy.

Current Trends and Future Outlook

The number of jobs in “renewable energy or energy-efficient industries” is skyrocketing, with the American Solar Energy Society estimating it at about 8.5 million, and Marks predicting it could clear 40 million by 2030.

The government is stepping in as well:

Boosting Green Energy

The U.S. Congress has created investment tax credits for solar and wind energy and has mandated greater use of biofuels.

From Schools to Solar

Individual states are passing renewable-energy standards, adding green industry education in schools, and subsidizing the installation of solar cells on home rooftops.

Greening the Urban Landscape

On the local level, individual municipalities are instituting sustainability initiatives as well, like the recent green building ordinances adopted by Los Angeles.

The Business of Sustainability

The Jobs Windfall

Wind power plants are opening in states across the country, and GE alone has created more than 5,000 U.S. jobs, and expects that number to top 10,000, in this industry.

Solar Surge

Solar energy companies have announced expansions and upgrades in 2007, and we can expect this trend to continue in the coming years.

Cleantech Investment Explosion

U.S. venture-capital investment in “green”, cleantech companies set a new record in 2007.

The boom in green industries bodes especially well for construction. Besides the permanent jobs created by these industries, thousands and thousands of additional jobs for the construction of new structures, or the renovation of old structures, will be created as well. All types of construction, commercial, residential, and governmental, will experience the benefits.

Construction Jobs

Hiring Trends in Construction

The Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor announced today that nonfarm payroll employment rose by 110,000, and upwardly revised the July and August numbers significantly (revised to 93,000 and 89,000 respectively). Especially striking is the switch in August from losing 4,000 jobs to adding 89,000. The unemployment rate rose by 0.1 to 4.7%. (read the BLS report here)
Still, despite this overall increase, “construction employment continued to decline” by about 14,000 jobs. Over 1/3 of all job losses in September were related to housing. This information, taken together, adds validity to my last two posts. While the overall economy and labor markets are improving, hopefully leading to an increase in construction labor in the coming months, it is currently a “hiring market” in the construction industry. Companies can afford to be selective.

Recovery in the Commercial Paper Market

Another factor that should help housing woes, and in turn construction jobs, is the state of the commercial paper market. On August 15th, MarketWatch ran an article titled Subprime woes infect commercial paper market. The commercial paper market is called the “working capital lifeblood for the corporate sector.” Many mortgage companies, including the giant Countrywide Financial, rely on this “source of funding”. The article warned that “disruptions in this market may be hitting mortgage-related companies the hardest”.
Fortunately, ”the beleaguered market for short-term corporate commercial credit finally got a bit of good news by registering its first volume increase since the August liquidity crisis, according to Federal Reserve data” (NY Times). The total outstanding commercial paper increased by $4.5 billion. Furthermore, a chief fixed-income strategist says, “These data, combined with persistent declines in commercial paper rates, are clear evidence of stabilization in the commercial paper market.” With commercial paper improving, and long-term corporate bonds healthy, the signs point to “corporate credit markets…returning to normal.”
Hopefully, these improvements will not take too long to start trickling down. Perhaps we will see a residential construction turnaround soon.

Only time will tell.

  • Becoming Competitive in a Tight Construction Job Market

If you read yesterday’s post, then you know that current labor conditions are allowing hiring managers to be quite selective. In such a job market, job seekers need to go the extra mile to get a great position. But what are the best ways to set yourself apart from the pack?
In interviewing and speaking with hiring managers and HR people, it has become clear that two areas stand above the rest: education and performance.

  • Guide for Career Advancement

Education is a great place to start. Your base education (high school/undergraduate/graduate degree) can be augmented with any number of continuing education or skills programs, as well as higher degrees. A simple search will reveal tons of schools offering both online and hands-on programs. You can learn how to use a specific piece of equipment or a computer program in less than a month or get your MBA in Construction Management over a couple of years. And again, you can find programs that will fit into your schedule, no matter what it is. Most online courses can be taken at your leisure: whether you have time at 2 pm or 2 am. Continuing education not only looks good on your resume but makes you a more valuable asset to the company. So, not only will you be competitive for more jobs, but you are also likely to encounter greater job security as well as higher pay. The downside to continuing education is its costs: courses, no matter where or how they are taken, cost money.

  • The Power of Performance

Performance can be a more difficult area to focus on than education simply because education is easier to secure. If you want to take a course, you simply sign up online and take it. Performance is not so easy. I am constantly surprised by how many people sell themselves short and therefore have a hard time communicating how they have over-performed. Often we will assume that a certain accomplishment or accolade is not “good” or “important enough” to show that we are good performers, or we will overlook numbers and improvements that seem “normal” or “expected” to us, not realizing that they are truly impressive. As with proofreading a resume, pinning down concrete examples of exceptional performance can be easier with a friend or colleague to bounce ideas off of. Often, this outside perspective can help separate the noteworthy achievements from the ones that should remain unmentioned.
This topic goes hand in hand with one I covered a few weeks ago: Passive Job Seeking.

Tight Labor Market Shows a Benevolent Side to Hiring Managers

Construction employment has been declining in recent months. The Bureau of Labor Statistics’ The Employment Situation: August 2007 reports that nonfarm payroll employment fell by 4,000 in August. Furthermore, “employment in manufacturing, construction, and local government education declined”. Construction employment lost roughly 22,000 jobs, and “since its peak in September 2006, construction employment has fallen by 96,000.”

Selective Hiring Shapes the Workforce

This situation reminds me of an article I read in BusinessWeek about the 2001 middle and upper manager crisis. Starting in July 2000, “the number of managers and professionals on the unemployment rolls…jumped” by “24.7%”. Then, like now, unemployment was at a “rock-bottom 4.5%”, and actual unemployment for those professionals was still less than half that: 2.2%.
What was the result? Some companies used a “revolving-door strategy – shedding weaker performers while simultaneously welcoming promising new talent – to upgrade the quality of their workforce”. Everyone could afford to use “selective hiring”. Madelaine Pfau, a managing partner of a professional services practice interviewed in the article, made an astute observation: “I think during the last bubble, people were hiring anything that could move…I think the standards are higher for the people they are bringing in.”
With the current labor market, construction and homebuilding companies can afford to ‘upgrade’ their staff. If companies act quickly and wisely, they may beat the “gold rush for talent that will attend the first signs of a strong recovery”. The best candidates always go first, and those who wait may find themselves wishing they had not.

They didn’t have windows but that was the least of his problems. Decorating in 1978 was strictly home mail-order. Sales totaled $1.5 million, and the company was losing money. A New Direction Then along came Canadian Robert who found out about the company and was impressed by the quality of the products and the reasonable prices. purchased the rights to develop The Company window and decorating in Canada, which included access to the overseas supply channels Harper had established, mainly in Taiwan. Comparing Windows

There are several universal scales through which windows, designed by different manufacturers, may be compared. The most important values are the U and R values. R stands for resistance and denotes the window’s ability to block heat flow. U is the reciprocal of R and therefore represents the amount of heat that does transfer through the window.

New Windows from Insul-Sash Stop Energy Loss

Thermal Transmittance (U-Value) Due to Conduction

Non-conductive vinyl framing members and insulated glass reduce conduction and resultant heat loss to a value far below wood windows with a storm sash.

Thermal Transmittance (U-Value) Due to Air Infiltration

Superior weather tripping and precision interlocks reduce air infiltration to a level well below wood windows with a storm sash.

Condensation Resistance Factor (CRF)

Through the use of rigid vinyl frame members and insulated glass, Insul-Sash Windows resist condensation and exceed recommended industry minimum CRF ratings.

Vinyl Replacement Siding

When selecting siding, it’s much more than just choosing a color. It’s important to be aware of each brand’s profile and finish, too. Our profiles range from popular Dutch Lap and Clapboard to Vertical Board & Batten — all available in quality finishes like light rough-sawn, soft-brushed, and driftwood. Legend Windows and Siding of Iowa, Inc. offers Sovereign 16 vinyl siding. It is dent-resistant and virtually unaffected by harsh weather. Since the color goes through each panel, our vinyl products don’t show scratches or chip and peel-like painted surfaces, eliminating time-consuming scraping and repainting.

Discover the Excellence of Sovereign™ 16

Select Sovereign™ 16 with the 16′ panel that’s one-third longer than conventional siding for greater coverage, fewer seams, and a truly exquisite finish. This extra-long length provides a smoother, more uniform appearance by reducing the number of laps or seams by up to 30 percent. Able to withstand hurricane-velocity winds*, ultra-premium Sovereign 16 also features a double-nailing hem and our exclusive Advantage Lock™ system that securely connects panels for greater rigidity and stability. The 3/4″ butt height provides a deeper dimension that adds distinct, tasteful beauty to its exceptional performance.

  • Extra-long 16′ panels allow for a smoother appearance with up to 30% fewer seams than standard 12′ siding.
  • Extra heavy wall thickness for superior rigidity ensures straight, smooth walls.
  • Exclusive Advantage Lock™ system securely connects panels, greatly enhancing rigidity and stability.
  • Rich cedar-grain emboss with a low-gloss finish achieves natural appeal and excellent durability and requires minimal maintenance.
  • Full-roll nailing hem provides double-strength wall attachment with blow-off resistance up to 239 MPH winds.
  • Superior lap height creates a deeper dimensional look and enhanced shadow lines.
  • Lifetime limited warranty.

Cellular Shades And Vertical Cellular Shades Mix

Have you seen horizontal Cellular Shades mixed with vertical Cellular Shades over large front room windows and master bedroom windows, including patio sliding doors?
If your answer is “nope “and you’d like to take a look at what the combination looks like put all together, read on.

1. We have a large front room with oversized windows and a sliding patio door.

2. Then, we have a master bedroom with a single, average-sized window and a large sliding patio door.

3. Finally, there’s a single window above a bathtub in the master bathroom.

Cellular Shades in Front Room Window

  • The picture above shows you a smooth match when combining two different (but similar) cellular shades. There are three honeycomb shades in total. The one in the middle is a vertical cellular shade that opens and stacks to the right. It’s covering a patio sliding door.
  • There was enough space within the window frame to mount it as an inside mount (which makes it look “almost” flush with the window frame).
  • Such a note gave it a nice, clean, and finished look.
  • The metal headrail is covered by a matching wooden valance.

Vertical Cellular Shade

  • Notice how the light-filtering material gently diffuses the strong incoming light of the day. The sun was strong that day and it made the room feel “hot”.
  • Once we put up the shades, we noticed a temperature drop in the room right away.
  • Even our sunglasses came off.
  • Now, what’s happening in the bedroom … windows?
  • Blackout Honeycomb Shades In A Master Bedroom.
  • A Sliding Patio Door And An Average-Sized Window Covered.

Blackout Cellular Shades

  • Can you tell the difference between this picture and the one above it?
  • The latter has a blackout liner and filters out 100% of the light trying to get through it.
  • Of course, the peaked window above the slider allows some light in. But that’s what the customer wanted to have.
  • This Vertiglide® stacks to the right and away from the sliding door handle. These shades come as right, left, or center-split cellular window coverings.
  • Both shades are again mounted as an inside mount within the window frames.
  • Now, let’s peek in and see what’s up with the master bathroom window.

Honeycomb Shades In A Master Bathroom

  • Top Down Bottom Up Cellular Shades.
  • With EasyRise™ Pull Cords.
  • Since the architect of this house will never take a bath here, but the owners will, a window covering is a must.

Why?

  • The window faces a busy common road with cars and people trotting through all day long.

Cellular Shades to the Rescue.

  • Let’s make it top-down and bottom-up (to maintain the view as needed).
  • Then, let’s make it easier on us and order EasyRise™ controls from Hunter Douglas, shall we?
  • And that’s what we got. Right and left controls release the shade’s movable rails (movie) towards the shade’s center to release) – the rails fall with gravity.
  • To pull them back up, use the cords and gently pull down and let go, and pull down and let go … until the rails are up.
  • Now, nobody can peek in the master bathroom, the blackout liner does its job in the master bedroom, and the light-filtering fabric protects the hardwood floors and cuts down the glare and temperature in the front room.
  • Cellular Shades in action and you’ve seen it here like this first.

Home Security – How to Prevent Intruder

The Importance of Locking Doors

A home alarm system can certainly alert you and the local authorities that an intruder is attempting to break into your home. This same alarm will hopefully scare off the intruder; never to return. However, there are a handful of other measures to take to prevent intruders regardless of whether you have a home alarm system installed or not. It seems obvious, but it can’t hurt to re-state the importance of locking your doors when you leave your home or go to bed at night. Even if you live in what you would consider a “safe area”, you just never know.

Avoiding Common Mistakes

Avoid keeping spare keys under mats, on top of door frames, in planters, or your mailbox. These are the first places an intruder might look. Find a more secure hiding spot or better yet give it to a neighbor to hang on to for you.

Tips to Prevent Access Through Ladders

Store in a shed or garage ladders or outdoor furniture that can be used to access top-floor windows. Intruders know that often second-floor windows are left unlocked and if it is easy to get up to them, they will. Keep the shrubbery and trees along the foundation of your home cut short and thin. Make it so not one bush can be used to hide a person easily. Organize a neighborhood watch program in your community. These programs can make a significant impact on reducing crime and fear in your area. Before heading on an extended trip, there are steps to take to secure your home and its belongings while you are gone. The key is to make your home look as if it is occupied and give away no clues to the fact you have been away and might be for a while.

Important Factors

  • Be careful not to advertise that you will be out of town. Many people post on social networking sites their every move. Updating your status with “leaving for vacation now” is just the invitation a thief wants.
  • Ask neighbors or relatives to watch your house while you are gone. See if your local police department will also keep an eye on your home.
  • Stop mail and newspaper delivery or have a neighbor take it in every day. Have that same neighbor bring in any packages that may arrive when you are gone. Leaving a delivery outside of your garage for days is a dead giveaway that nobody is home.
  • Arrange to have your lawn mowed or snow shoveled if needed.
  • Install a handful of self-timers on lamps to turn on at dusk and off at bedtime. Make sure to stagger the times the lamps go on and off.
  • All the lights going on at the same time is obvious to anybody watching your home. Also, install timers on televisions or radios to turn on and off at different times each day.
  • Turn the ringer down on your telephone if it can be heard from the outside.
  • Have a neighbor, relative, or friend change the positions of your window treatments each day. Preferably mimic the pattern you regularly make when you are home; open during the day, closed at night.

Once you have implemented these tricks, you may want to consider installing a wireless home security alarm system. Many of these systems are DIY projects that you can complete in a weekend.
